Youth Empowerment through Youth Led Street Sports

Lebanon has faced instability and uncertainty over the past five years, marked by events such as the Beirut port explosion in 2020, and a youth uprising in 2019 that demanded political reforms and accountability from the political elite for the country’s well-being. Lebanon also hosts the highest number of refugees per capita, with an estimated 1.5 million Syrian refugees and 257.000 Palestinian refugees, contributing to tensions between these groups and the host community. A lack of public spaces for positive interactions among people from diverse backgrounds is one of the factors exacerbating these tensions.

Youth, particularly, are the least likely to have regular interactions with people of different nationalities. Creating opportunities for cross-cultural encounters is vital for easing tensions and reducing the potential for violence in Lebanon, especially among the younger generation.

In this project, GAME Lebanon aims to empower youth and alleviate tensions between refugees and host communities through sports activities, cultural events, and social initiatives.

The project is supported with 1 060 000 SEK.

Project Activities:

  • – Development of GAME Lebanon’s volunteer training program and the introduction of a new component that equips young people with skills in social entrepreneurship and cultural activities.
  • – Training of youth aged 15–25, both refugees and Lebanese, as youth leaders.
  • – Design and implementation of social initiatives in public spaces by the youth leaders.

Why was the project supported?

The project is instrumental in bridging gaps between communities, thereby reducing tensions which are key to fostering a robust democratic society.
