Making the next decade count for nature

The world is facing a nature and climate crisis. In 2021, important international agreements for nature and climate will be reached that will set the course for the next decade and beyond.

This project will provide the underpinning essential biodiversity data and information to; a) contribute to the robustness and ambition of these agreement, and b) allow countries to effectively implement nature and climate agreements; and c) transparently track international progress towards agreed targets to help hold countries to account against commitments made in 2021.

UNEP-WCMC will deliver this through two related pathways: Upgrading the UN Biodiversity Lab (UNBL) a UNBL is an impact-orientated geospatial platform designed to support policymakers in developing data-driven sustainable nature-dependent development solutions. The project will also Design and create a new target tracker tool where UNEP-WCMC will build a continual, forward-looking tracker for the global goals and targets within the Convention on Biological Diversity’s post-2020 biodiversity framework.

The Swedish Postcode Foundation supports the project with SEK 2,977,000.

What the project delivers

All countries, but particularly least developed and developing countries which are data-poor but biodiversity-rich, will be able to make more informed decisions when planning the use and allocation of land and ocean. Environmental change and progress toward achieving internationally agreed biodiversity goals and targets can be measured across all countries. Civil society will have the tools to hold countries to account regarding their actions and progress towards agreements throughout the next decade.
