Baltic Health Index for Blekinge Arkipelag
The Baltic Sea, including the ecosystem of the Blekinge Archipelago Biosphere Reserve, is affected by both global and regional challenges. However, different sectors of society often operate without knowledge of each other, and there is a lack of understanding of how ecological, social, and economic components are interconnected and affect one another.
In this project, the Blekinge Archipelago Biosphere Reserve aims to create a Baltic Health Index for the Blekinge Archipelago, that serves as a common starting point for various initiatives aimed at creating a sustainable society.
The project is supported with 1 800 000 SEK.
The project is part of the The Swedish Postcode Lottery Foundation’s initiative “Coastal Ecosystems in Sweden”, which aims to contribute to the biodiversity of coastal ecosystems and their ability to protect against the negative effects of climate change along the coasts.
What’s happening in the project?
- – Installation of measurement stations to collect data,
- – Training in entering data into the Baltic Health Index,
- – Development of a regional Baltic Health Index for the Blekinge Archipelago with 7-12 measurement categories,
- – Making the index results visible,
- – Facilitating access to and evaluation of different stakeholders’ operations and measures,
- – Dissemination of information about the regional index to other biosphere reserves around the Baltic Sea.
Why is the project supported?
The project contributes to the biodiversity of coastal ecosystems and their ability to protect against the negative effects of climate change along the coasts by reducing human negative impact.
