“Dangerous security”: fighting impunity for international crimes committed by private military and security actors

The use of Private Military and Security Actors (PMSAs) – including mercenaries, mercenary-related actors and private military and security companies – is rising globally. States and companies across industries such as mining, agriculture, forestry, and finance contract those actors to operate in a number of contexts – including conflict affected or fragile areas where business activities remain under regulated.

With this project, TRIAL International seeks to combat impunity for international crimes perpetrated in link with the provision of private military and security services, advance accountability and access to justice for victims. The project also aims to enhance the capacity of local actors to document, monitor, and report such crimes, while raising awareness to help create an environment conducive to stronger regulations for corporate actors.

The project is supported with 2 990 000 SEK.

What happens in the project?

With this project, TRIAL International will:

  • – Conduct one in-depth training for civil society organisations from various countries on monitoring, documentation and reporting of cases of corporate international crimes;
  • – Extensively document corporate international crimes cases to build evidence for strategic litigations;
  • – Carry out advocacy initiatives supporting the development of a stronger international legal framework for regulation and accountability of corporate actors and PMSAs.

Why is the project supported?

Ensuring accountability and providing victims of international crimes with access to justice and redress are essential for fostering peaceful and inclusive societies.
