Protected Carbon
To meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has determined that all new extraction of coal, oil, and gas must cease; simultaneously, investments in fossil operations must also end. Despite this, planning for extraction and investments in fossil projects continues in protected areas, which, in addition to climate impact, leads to significant consequences for biodiversity.
LINGO has identified 900 protected areas where fossil projects are planned, which together would contribute to the release of 50.8 billion tons of carbon dioxide. One of the designated projects threatened by fossil extraction is the Marawah Biosphere Reserve marine reserve, home to one of the world’s largest populations of endangered dugongs.
In this project, LINGO – Leave it in the Ground Initiative, aims to collaborate with various stakeholders to raise awareness of fossil projects in protected areas, thereby contributing to their cessation.
The project is supported with 1 520 000 SEK.
What’s happening in the project?
- – A global coalition of civil society actors will be created to protect the Marawah Biosphere Reserve marine reserve.
- – Advocacy work will be conducted for more protected areas with planned fossil projects.
- – Awareness and interest will be increased to stop fossil projects in protected areas.
Why was the project supported?
By highlighting the fossil projects planned in protected areas and their climate impact, this project contributes to stopping the fossil projects and safeguarding protected areas.
