THE HERDS

We’ve known for decades how human activity harms the climate and the serious consequences it causes. Yet, despite strong scientific evidence, public action has been limited. There’s a clear gap between understanding the problem and taking meaningful steps to solve it. To close this gap, we need to create emotional connections to the climate crisis—and inspire people to act. Puppet theatre is a powerful art form that can do just that.

With the project THE HERDS, Walk to the Horizon uses large-scale puppet theatre and educational activities to engage young people in environmental issues. The goal is to give the next generation the knowledge, tools, and passion to protect our planet.

THE HERDS is a large-scale public art and climate action project. It brings together culture and climate awareness to inspire change and reconnect people with nature. Life-sized animal puppets are touring the world – from the Democratic Republic of Congo to the Arctic Circle. These puppets represent animals fleeing from environmental destruction.

The project is supported with 2,200,000 SEK.

What’s happening in the project?

  • – In partnership with organizations like TED Countdown, UNEP, and WWF, the project is creating climate action messages to help communities along the route take real steps toward reducing their climate impact.
  • – In Sweden, the project will include major performances in Stockholm and Malmö, along with long-term engagement opportunities for schools and communities.
  • – In Stockholm, three public performances will be held. Volunteers will take part in workshops on puppet-making and performance, learning how to use art to raise awareness about climate issues.
  • – An educational program and online platform will offer schools, families, and communities, interactive resources to help young people reconnect with nature. The platform will include lesson plans, activities, and climate solutions inspired by leading environmentalists and scientists.
  • – In collaboration with local partners, the project will work closely with selected primary schools to ensure the materials are used. Workshops with small puppets representing endangered animals will help students explore biodiversity, nature, and climate through creative play.
