The Europa Fund for Documentary Journalism
The traditional media ecology is weakening and needs to be reimagined. Just like in traditional journalism, resources have been draining away from the documentary field over the past two decades, a trend accelerated by the financial crash in 2008 and certain to be exacerbated by the financial slowdown caused by Covid-19 in 2020/21.
Storytellers play a crucial role in framing how our societies understand both the crises of our time, and their solutions. That is as true for the climate emergency as understanding the impacts of info tech & bio tech in the 21st century as well as public health emergencies such as Covid-19. There is no doubt this will be a period of massive disruption for the whole sector, so envisioning what media infrastructure can be built on the other side is imperative.
In this project, Doc Society aims to create a coalition of funders to support excellence in European documentary filmmaking. Uplifting critical narratives and supporting filmmakers with resources beyond traditional partners in public service broadcasting and the national film funds.
The project is supported with 4 600 000 SEK
