Theresa Goma is a One Acre Fund farmer from Blantyre District. She joined One Acre Fund 2017 and she is also a chief in her area. She is a married woman with three children who are all school going children. She has a niece who she lives with and takes care of all her needs including paying her school fees. She benefitted from the One Acre Fund yield insurance cover in the 2017/2018 season because that year a drought occured and many farmers didnot harvest much. Theresa was one of the farmers who were affected by the drought. She loves One Acre Fund because of the quality inputs they offer.

Training for increased food security in Malawi

The impact of COVID-19 has been substantial for Malawian farmers. 80 percent of the country’s population is involved in the agricultural sector and work to supply the growing country with food. The pandemic has meant that travel restrictions, dwindling investments and a tougher export market. COVID-19 has meant an increased risk for worse food security, lower nutritional levels and widespread poverty in the country – especially in combination with increased pressure from climate change.

One Acre Fund will adapt their trainings to be practical and relevant in the age of the pandemic, all while also lessening the consequences of COVID-19 on the farmers ability to keep feeding the country.

The project is supported with SEK 2,080,000.

What the program delivers

Addressing farmers’ access to personal protection equipment to decrease the levels of infection and train farmers to lessen the risk for food security issues brought on by the pandemic.
