Climate Change and Northern Forest Protection
The forests can play a big role in a scenario where we manage to keep the temperature increase
within 1.5 degrees according to the Paris Agreement.
In this project, AirClim aims for increased protection of boreal and temperate forests by coordinating and mobilizing the
environmental movement to carry out advocacy work towards the UN and the EU.
The project is supported with SEK 3 800 000.
What does the project deliver?
The project has three parts:
- – The first part consists of producing new research and compiling, simplifying and making
available existing research in the field. - – In the second part, a global working group of researchers, environmental organizations is established to use the data to fill knowledge gaps that exist in the environmental movement and enable networking and coordination. The environmental movement is trained in the climate
convention. - Lastly, AirClim and partners carry out advocacy work towards the EU and the UN through meetings, referrals, seminars and events.
Why do we support this project?
The boreal and temperate forests in Europe, North America, the Caucas and Central Asia play a decisive role as carbon sinks to preserve biological diversity – therefore it is important to protect and restore them. The boreal forest has been deprioritized compared to the tropical forests, and the coordination between actors working with forest and climate issues needs to be improved. The project brings the various organizations together and creates better conditions for a larger impact. The project is part of the Foundtion’s Northern Forest Initiative.
