Ending impunity for private sector actors for serious environmental destruction through innovative NGO-driven investigations

This project supports an innovative way to investigate environmental destruction and other illegal activities that contribute to climate change. Prosecutors and other law enforcement professionals direct and coordinate the information collection of NGOs and other experts to build strong legal cases that can be prosecuted in court. This innovative approach will be applied in the context of two cases, namely the large scale environmental destruction and human right violations committed by a Peruvian lead mine and illegal deforestation in Brazil.

The project is supported with 2 950 000 SEK.

What the project delivers

Thoroughly investigated case files will be made available to the competent legal authorities for prosecution and other forms of enforcement. To enhance the impact, these case files will also be made available to advocacy groups.

Why we support this project

Environmental destruction and climate change are the defining challenges of our time. Through this project, law enforcement will be empowered to contribute to addressing these challenges.
