Increased gender equality through changing discriminatory laws
Every third woman in the world has been subjected to physical or sexual violence (according to the WHO). In some regions, there are laws and regulations that uphold these vulnerable situations for women. This may be for example, a law that gives the person who committed a sexual assault the right to avoid punishment if married to the victim. In this project, Equality Now will work to increase gender equality and reduce the existence of discriminatory laws in the Middle East, North Africa, and the former Soviet Union, through local and national capacity-building efforts.
What the project delivers
Capacity building and strengthening of networks for women’s organizations in the MENA region and former Soviet Union.
Why we support this project
Violence against women affects individuals and society at large. By changing laws and social norms, one can work to create equality and peaceful development.
