Protecting Freedom of Expression in Europe

The European Court of Human Rights (“ECtHR”) has issued 330 leading judgments finding a violation of the right to free speech. These judgments concern the most critical free speech issues in Europe today, including defamation laws, media ownership, and journalists’ safety. Judgments from the ECtHR have an invaluable role to play in pushing authorities to make the necessary reforms.

In this project, the European Implementation Network seeks to promote forms of  freedom of speech by strengthening the capacity of civil society and implementing  rulings from the European Court of Human Rights.

The project is supported with SEK 1,940,000.

What does the project deliver?

The project consists of 2 parts:

  • – EIN will reach out, train, empower civil society organizations, lawyers and journalists so that they know which rulings the European Court of Justice has issued and how it can be implemented.
  • – The organizations carry out advocacy work for the implementation of the rulings.

Why do we support this project?

Freedom of speech plays an important role in critically examining and disseminating information and is fundamental in a democratic society. The project contributes to protecting this freedom since it is being challenged in many countries, including countries in Europe.
