The Salmon Heroes
The management organizations of the Baltic Sea rivers are crucial actors for an ecosystem-based and stock-specific management of the rivers. They engage in habitat care, litter collection, disease outbreak monitoring, and make the river valleys accessible to the public through activities, such as fishing. However, these organizations predominantly consist of older individuals working on a voluntary basis with limited knowledge, and there is a significant risk that these organizations will lose capacity, while there is a great need for sustainable management of the rivers.
In this project, The Baltic Salmon Fund, aims to strengthen the capacity of the Baltic Sea rivers’ management organizations with the goal of creating conditions for long-term and sustainable management of the rivers.
The project is supported with 2 000 000 SEK.
The project is part of the The Swedish Postcode Lottery Foundation’s initiative “Coastal Ecosystems in Sweden”, which aims to contribute to the biodiversity of coastal ecosystems and their ability to protect against the negative effects of climate change along the coasts.
What’s happening in the project?
- – Strengthening the capacity of management organizations in digital workflows and tools, as well as support to implement these to simplify their work,
- – Development of a digital forum for collaboration and information sharing between the organizations,
- – Creation of management plans and manuals to facilitate supervision.
