Kick-off Learning

Over the past five years, northern Mozambique has been marked by a violent conflict between armed groups. More than one million people are displaced from their homes, half of whom are children at risk of physical and psychological stress and violence. In northern Mozambique, school enrolment is significantly lower than the national average and about half of the population lives below the poverty line. The risks for children and young people to become involved in the armed conflict are great when the opportunities for education and livelihood are low.

Mozambique is also particularly vulnerable to climate change, where cyclones and floods have had a very negative impact on agriculture and other livelihoods. The country is in many ways a forgotten crisis, with limited international aid. Funds needed to address the education and refugee crisis for 2023 are so far only covered by 1%.

In this project, Street Child seeks for well-being and strengthen the opportunities for education and job training for refugee children and young people through sports activities and educational initiatives.

The project is supported with SEK 2 580 000.

What does the project deliver?

The project consists of three parts:

  • – By involving children and young people in sports activities, individual and groupbased counselling will be provided for children, young people and adults present.
  • – Children who have fallen behind or dropped out of school due to displacement would be given the opportunity to attend an accelerated education programme, with the aim of returning to formal schooling afterwards.
  • – Young people are given the opportunity to undergo vocational training that includes support and mentoring. Some of the young people will be supported to start up their own businesses, others will have the opportunity for an internship at local companies.

Why do we support this project?

Good health and education are fundamental prerequisites for peoples ability to reach their full potential and contribute to the development of society. Ensuring that refugee children have access to an education and good mental and physical health is an important key to building a democratic society.
